{"id":223,"date":"2016-03-26T21:42:10","date_gmt":"2016-03-27T04:42:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sci.sdsu.edu\/lipsonlab\/?p=223"},"modified":"2016-03-26T21:44:33","modified_gmt":"2016-03-27T04:44:33","slug":"soil-blind","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sci.sdsu.edu\/lipsonlab\/soil-blind\/","title":{"rendered":"Soil Blind"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As part of Urban Succession, a project coordinated by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rogalskiart.com\/urban-succession-sculptures.html\" target=\"_blank\">Jason Rogalski<\/a> and supported by a DNA of Creativity grant, I collaborated with ceramic artists, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/pages\/Soil-Blind-Project\/572832406074955?fref=ts\" target=\"_blank\">Jeremy Gercke and Jonathan Austin<\/a>. (See <a href=\"http:\/\/newscenter.sdsu.edu\/sdsu_newscenter\/news.aspx?s=74141\">news article<\/a> on SDSU web page). This work was featured in an exhibit at the Oceanside Museum of Art in April 2014. Note the great variety in color, showing varying organic matter content and mineralogy. I was surprised how &#8220;soil-like&#8221; these materials taken from urban environments were. They were not overly contaminated with metals or coliform bacteria, and some of the samples were actually quite rich in organic matter and nutrients (though we did have to pick out some odd urban detritus &#8211; particularly memorable was the animal print bra).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sci.sdsu.edu\/lipsonlab\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/SoilBlind.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-222\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-222\" src=\"https:\/\/sci.sdsu.edu\/lipsonlab\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/SoilBlind-300x156.jpg\" alt=\"SoilBlind\" width=\"300\" height=\"156\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sci.sdsu.edu\/lipsonlab\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/SoilBlind-300x156.jpg 300w, https:\/\/sci.sdsu.edu\/lipsonlab\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/SoilBlind-106x55.jpg 106w, https:\/\/sci.sdsu.edu\/lipsonlab\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/SoilBlind.jpg 589w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The soils were mixed and placed into the ceramic sculpture pictured above, installed at the Woodbury School of Architecture.
