We found that elevated CO<sub>2<\/sub> increased root production, which led to an increase in fungal diversity in these soils.\u00a0 The results were published in <a href=\"http:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1111\/gcb.12609\/full\" target=\"_blank\">Global Change Biology<\/a> in 2014. This is an update of our study <a href=\"http:\/\/aem.asm.org\/content\/71\/12\/8573.short\" target=\"_blank\">published in 2005<\/a>, which reported effects of elevated CO2 on microbial biomass, activity and community structure. In the 2005 study, we saw increased root biomass under elevated CO2, and alterations in the functioning of the microbial community. However, the bacterial community was not greatly altered by the CO2 treatment.
