Organic Chemistry Research Internship in Sweden, Summer 2019

Joanna Garcia

Are you interested in conducting organic chem research internship in Sweden next summer?

Get ready for the experience of a lifetime!

Summer 2019 will be the fourth time that Dr. Mikael Bergdahl’s Organic Chemistry Research Internship is being offered in collaboration with his colleagues at The University of Gothenburg and Chalmers University of Technology in Gothenburg, Sweden.  Students who have successfully completed Chemistry 432 by May, 2019 are eligible for placement.

Dates Abroad :  May 29, 2019 – August 3, 2019

Deadline for Application:  March 1, 2019  on Aztecs Abroad. (note, the deadline was previously listed as April 1.) Strongly suggest applying in January.)

Deadline to book accommodations   March 27, 2019  Financial details on accommodations are  in next section.

Course Cost:  No cost for course.  If you wish to enroll in Chem 497, 498 (undergrad) or Chem 797, 798 (grad) in the Fall of 2019, you may do so.

How are students placed?   When you arrive in Sweden you will be fully oriented to the area and will be teamed with an organic chemistry professor or team at one of two highly ranked universities:  University of Gothenberg  or Chalmers University of Technology;  both universities are housed under one roof.  Your specific medicinal/organic chemistry interests can be taken into consideration when making these research placements.

Why should I consider this internship?  International competence and practical internship experience are both highly prized factors when searching for a job in the field. Many of our SDSU Gothenburg alumni have successfully entered the biotechnology work force in San Diego or prestigious graduate schools in the USA;  a key distinguishing component in their interviews was  first hand international experience, in particular,  having the ability to communicate effectively with people of other cultures in the field of organic chemistry.

What are my chances of being admitted into the program?

If you have strong grades in Chemistry 432, your chances are good.  Approximately 8 – 10 students are expected to be admitted to this program.  I n2018 we had 20 applicants, and admitted 10 students. Two students had to withdraw because of a change in their plans.

What is the application process?  Apply to the program here on Aztecs Abroad by the end of January, 2019.     There will be an interviews beginning in February to discuss your background, academic plans and research interests. Dr. Bergdahl will then review candidates’ background with his colleagues in Gothenburg, and will make placements accordingly.

When will I know if I’m admitted?  We expect to have admissions completed in the first week of April.

Will there be an orientation?  Yes in mid April.  Details will be discussed such as flights, arrivals in Gothenburg,  transportation and accommodations, costs.   Students will decide what sorts of accommodations they would like, and talk to others in the group about roommate possibilities.

What kind of accommodations will we have?  University student apartments near campus. See the next section.

How is the public transport in Gothenburg? Public transportation is extensive, convenient, and inexpensive.

Can I talk directly with a student who has studied abroad on this internship in Gothenburg?  Yes!  Contact Maureen Crawford mcrawford@sdsu.edu and she would be happy to make that connection.

GOTHENBURG HOUSING   Options:

Note USD $ amounts are approximate, based on exchange rate on December 20, 2018. (Google “convert Swedish Krona to USD” for an on line tool.)

Option 1   Double Room at Utlandagatan  This accommodates 2 students. There is one bedroom with 2 beds inside (European bed width is slightly narrower than a US twin bed) , a bathroom, and a common area.  The beds that you see pictured can be separated, and the room is shared with a same gender roommate.  The apartment includes a bathroom, a desk and television, and a mini kitchen (click on link for details.) The fully equipped kitchen is not inside the apartment, it is down the hall and is shared by all students on the floor. There is also a large communal dining area for students in that area.

Price of this Utandagtan double room is Swedish Krona 22,440.00 entire 66 night period; this converts to approximately  US Dollars $ 2,502.73 (at December 20, 2019  conversion rate) for the entire 66 night period. This cost can be shared by 2 occupants

Option 2    2 room apartment at Gibraltargaten. This accommodates 2 students.  It is advertised as accommodating 3-4 students, however this would necessitate some occupants using the common living area sofa for sleeping; this would infringe on  everyone’s privacy. There is one bedroom with 2 beds (European bed width is slightly narrower than a US twin bed.) Each room would be for same gendered students. The beds you see pictured are to be separated. The apartment includes a bathroom, a common area with a couch  a dining table, and a fully equipped kitchen.

Price of this Gibraltargaten apartment is Swedish Krona 43,936 SEK  for entire 66 night period; this converts to approximately US Dollars $4,900.40 (at Dec 20, 2019 conversion rate.)   Cost can be shared by 2 occupants.

What is included in the apartments?  Click on links above to see details.

How are accommodations booked? At group orientation in the in early March, students will get to know each other and decide on housing arrangements. Students will book their own accommodations directly with the the apartment management, Veckobostader, in Gothenburg, via email with a credit card. Maureen will walk you through the process. Deadline to book accommodations is March 27, 2019, by credit card.

Important! Inform your bank of your upcoming plans BEFORE you make international bookings!  At least one business day before booking call your bank that you will be in Sweden during this time. And will be booking reservations soon.  If you don’t do this, your bank will notice an unusual charge to your account coming from Sweden and will DECLINE YOUR CREDIT CARD. Ouch!

Average temperatures in Gothenburg  It’s advised to bring a jacket, rain boots and an umbrella.

Cost of Living in Gothenburg:   is very similar to that of San Diego, with the exception of rent, which is much more costly in San Diego.

Tip for Organizers:  Make yourself an excel spreadsheet to keep things clear.

What is the key to winning scholarships?  A  powerful essay, and following instructions.  I suggest writing one basic essay and then tweaking it for each scholarship to which you apply.  If questions are asked, answer the questions. Follow all directions.   You’d be surprised how many students miss this!

Here are some essay guidelines.

Essay writing help is available! Here are 2 options.

1.  Make an appointment with the SDSU Writing Center to have them review your essay.

2.  Visit the writing tutor in GMCS 322, Anna.  Anna’s walk in hours are: Tuesdays and Thursdays 9 – 11 and Friday 10 – 11. ( The office says “MARC and MBRS” on the door but it is definitely open to all students.  To contact the office, phone  (619) 594-3744.
