Role of Innate Immune Response in Helicobacter-Induced Gastric Carcinogenesis

ABSTRACT

Cancer of the stomach, also known as gastric cancer, is the second leading cause of cancer deaths worldwide, and in the USA mortality is higher among minority populations.  Infection with the bacterium Helicobacter pylori is known to be the cause of most stomach cancer.  It is thought that infection with Helicobacter leads to chronic inflammation, which results in cancer development.  We propose to study the changes that occur in the stomach during Helicobacter infection using a mouse model in order to identify key factors that may lead to gastric cancer.  These results will increase our understanding of H. pylori-induced cancer and help inform the development of preventative therapies.
