Students at Southwestern, Grossmont or Cuyamaca College interested in a career in science can learn to do research – and get paid while they are learning in the SDSU Bridges to the Baccalaureate Program. If they are attending community college and intending to transfer to a four-year university such as SDSU, they can check with the Bridges program. It could be a bridge to a successful future! The Creating Scientists Program is designed to help incoming transfer students to SDSU get off to a fast start on their research careers.  The program, which focuses on reducing cancer disparities, includes 8 weeks of funded intensive summer training in research that takes place the summer before students transfer to SDSU.  Students attend weekly didactic training and are placed in research mentors’ labs for the summer; there is also funding for travel to a professional conference to present research findings during the subsequent academic year. The program is designed for students in the sciences. For more information, see or contact Dr. Vanessa Malcarne at
